ACUPUNTURA Y MASAJE TERAPÉUTICO

Stomach-Boosting Decoction (yi wei tang)

Pattern: Hiccough due to Depletion of Stomach Yin

Chief: Sheng di huang (Radix Rehmanniae) and Mai men dong (Radix Ophiopogonis), both of which are sweet, cooling, and moistening and thereby address both the root (Yin deficiency) and the branch (internal heat)

Deputy: Bei sha shen (Radix Glehniae) and Chao yu zhu (dry-fried Rhizoma Polygonati odorati), have a similar action. Entering the Stomach channel, they also direct the action of the Chief herbs more specifically to this organ.

Deputy: Bing tang (Saccharum cristallisatum) moistens the Lung, benefits the Stomach, and, as a primary sweet substance, moderates the actions of the other herbs. It is considered to be both assistant and the envoy in this formula.

The combined actions of these five herbs nourishes the Yin without being cloying, which would further obstruct the downward-directing function of the Stomach.
